Where you're actually losing time: braking data, explained

Ask a sim racer where they're losing time and nine out of ten will say "I brake too early." It's the most intuitive theory in racing: brake later, gain time. It's also, in the data, usually wrong — or at least wrong about which corner and wrong about what to change.

The three numbers that describe every corner

Strip a corner down to telemetry and three numbers describe almost everything about how you drove it:

Brake point — how many metres before the apex you first touched the brake. Minimum (apex) speed — the slowest the car got. Throttle commit — how many metres after the apex you reached full throttle and kept it. Compare those three against your own best lap, corner by corner, and lap-time mysteries mostly dissolve.

The pattern nobody expects: braking later and losing time

The most common expensive pattern in club-level data looks like this: you brake later than your best lap — feels heroic — but your apex speed is lower and your throttle commit is later. Net result: you lost time in a corner where you out-braked yourself. The late, hard brake pitched the car, killed your mid-corner platform, and the exit paid the bill.

From a real session of ours: T2 — braked 33m later than the reference lap, apex 6 km/h slower, full throttle 52m later, net loss 0.44s. The "braver" lap was the slower one. The data called it a rushed entry, not a braking win.

The reverse pattern exists too, and it's cheaper to fix: identical apex speed, identical mid-corner, but the brake came 20m earlier than your best. That one really is free time — same technique, later marker, and the delta trace shows a clean cliff with no bleed afterwards.

Consistency beats heroics — the numbers say so

Here's the uncomfortable arithmetic. A club driver's spread between their best and average flying lap is commonly two to five seconds. The gap between their best lap and a genuinely optimal lap at their skill level? Often under one second. The biggest prize on the table isn't a later brake marker — it's making your average lap look like your best one. Brake markers you hit every lap are worth more than brake markers you hit once.
