The one corner costing you the most (and how to find it in 10 seconds)

July 13, 2026 · 6 min read · MyRacingData

Here's the trap almost every improving sim racer falls into: you finish a stint two seconds off your best, so you try to fix everything — brake later here, more throttle there, tidy that chicane. You spread your attention across twelve corners and improve at none of them. The drivers who actually get faster do the opposite. They find the onecorner costing the most and attack it until it's gone.

Why one corner matters more than the rest combined

Lap-time loss is almost never spread evenly. Break a typical lap into corners and compare each against your best, and you'll usually see one or two corners holding half the total deficit while the rest are within a tenth. That concentration is good news: it means most of your lost time lives in a place small enough to actually practice. Fix the worst corner and you often bank more than the other eleven put together.

From a real session of ours at Zolder: across six corners, five were within a tenth of the best lap — and Turn 3 alone was 0.57s. Not "the lap needs work." One corner, one fix, more than half a second on the table.

How to actually spot it

You need a per-corner comparison of the lap you drove against your best, with the time delta for each corner. The corner with the biggest positive delta is your target — but the reason matters as much as the number. Check three things at that corner:

Apex speed. Slower than your best? You over-slowed the entry — the fix is carrying more speed through the middle, not braking later. Brake point. Later than your best but also slower at the apex? You out-braked yourself — that "brave" late brake upset the car and cost you the exit.Throttle commit. Getting to power later? The loss is on exit and it compounds down the next straight.

The counter-intuitive part

The corner that feelsworst is rarely the one costing the most. A scary, twitchy high-speed corner you survive is often fine on the clock; a boring medium-speed corner where you quietly lift too early can be bleeding half a second you never notice. Feel lies. The delta doesn't. That's the whole reason to look at the data instead of trusting the seat.

Let the tool point at it

This is exactly what MyRacingData's corner analysis does: it detects every corner on your lap, compares it to your best, and puts the verdict up front — "Biggest opportunity: Turn 3, you're losing 0.57s, carry more speed through the middle" — with a top-down track map that colours each turn by time lost or gained. No hunting through a table. It tells you the one corner to practice next, and why.
